Nikkei 225 Slips 0.90% as Chemical and Banking Sectors Drag Down

In Thursday’s trading session, Japan’s Nikkei 225 experienced a 0.90% decline, with losses primarily attributed to downturns in the Chemical, Petroleum & Plastic, Gas & Water, and Transportation Equipment sectors.

Closing in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 stood at a 0.90% decrease.

Among the top performers on the Nikkei 225 index was TDK Corp (TYO:6762), witnessing a 5.48% surge, equivalent to 408.00 points, closing at 7,850.00. Nomura Holdings Inc (TYO:8604) also demonstrated strength, adding 5.15% or 39.60 points, concluding at 808.80. Similarly, Daiichi Sankyo Co., Ltd. (TYO:4568) exhibited a gain of 5.13%, climbing 227.00 points to reach 4,650.00 by the session’s end.

Conversely, Aozora Bank, Ltd. (TYO:8304) faced a substantial decline of 21.49%, shedding 700.00 points and closing at 2,557.00. Sumitomo Dainippon Pharma Co Ltd (TYO:4506) experienced an 18.43% downturn, losing 80.00 points to finish at 354.00. Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. (TYO:4005) also struggled, marking a 6.04% decrease or 21.10 points, settling at 328.30.

In the Tokyo Stock Exchange, falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones significantly, with 2567 declining against 1100 advancing, while 216 remained unchanged.

TDK Corp (TYO:6762) achieved all-time highs, soaring 5.48% to 7,850.00. Nomura Holdings Inc (TYO:8604) reached 5-year highs, closing at 808.80 with a gain of 5.15%. Conversely, Sumitomo Dainippon Pharma Co Ltd (TYO:4506) touched all-time lows, experiencing an 18.43% dip to 354.00.

The Nikkei Volatility, reflecting the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, decreased by 4.90% to 18.84.

In commodities trading, March crude oil delivery saw a modest 0.16% increase to $75.97 per barrel. Meanwhile, April delivery of Brent oil rose by 0.14% to $80.66 per barrel, and the April Gold Futures contract fell by 0.35% or 7.25, closing at $2,060.15 per troy ounce.

In forex trading, USD/JPY showed a minimal 0.02% rise to 146.91, while EUR/JPY experienced a 0.17% decline, settling at 158.67.

The US Dollar Index Futures climbed by 0.40%, reaching 103.50.
